MEDIA RELEASE - RADIO STATIONS BECOME NEW EMERGENCY BROADCASTERS Posted: Thu 14th Oct 2010 - 08:10

Media release

From the Minister for Emergency Services

Two more community radio stations have become official emergency broadcasters in time for the bushfire season, Minister for Emergency Services Bob Cameron announced today.

Visiting Stereo 974 FM in Brooklyn and Plenty Valley FM today, Mr Cameron said the stations will become emergency broadcasters in a further bid to boost emergency messaging to communities in times of need.

Mr Cameron said the agreements are similar to the MOUs in place between the emergency services, community broadcaster UGFM – Radio Murrinidindi, commercial radio networks, ABC local radio and Sky News TV.

"Stereo 974 FM and Plenty Valley FM are both committed to providing official emergency information to all communities in their areas, no matter the emergency, and the Brumby Labor Government is proud to partner with them in having this historic MOU signed," Mr Cameron said.

"Both stations have a strong history of serving their respective communities and our Government is proud to have worked with the local communities to harness the great local work they do to help keep the community safer.

Mr Cameron said while all radio stations have access to emergency information, under the new agreement, Stereo 974 FM and Plenty Valley FM will break into programming to broadcast emergency warnings at the request of the emergency services, and move to continuous coverage in some circumstances.

Stereo 974 FM broadcasts on 97.4 FM to the western suburbs of Melbourne, including Brooklyn, Sunshine, Braybrook, and Footscray, while Plenty Valley FM transmits on 88.6 FM to high fire risk areas in the Nillumbik Shire Council and City of Whittlesea, including Eltham, North Warrandyte and areas of the Kinglake Ranges.

The Office of the Emergency Services Commissioner has invited all community broadcasters in Victoria to enter into emergency broadcasting MOUs, subject to their capabilities.

Acting Emergency Services Commissioner Joe Buffone said both stations will play a significant role in assisting the emergency services to alert local communities.

"Stereo 974 FM and Plenty Valley FM will assist their local areas by broadcasting local emergency warnings to the community as quickly as possible," Mr Buffone said.

"Local information is critical to saving lives and during this Fire Action Week a week we are dedicated to educating Victorians about how to prepare, act and survive during a fire."

ON YER BIKE AIRS ON STEREO 974 Posted: Wed 15th Apr 2009 - 09:04

Targetting the 25+ demographic, "On Yer Bike" has gone to air on STEREO 974 in Melbourne and will also be available via the Internet on www.stereo974.com with a totally new and fresh format, specifically focused on all facets of motorcycling (Leisure, Sport, and Daily Commuting). As you will be aware, STEREO 974 is committed to broadcast programmes of interest to the various communities and social groups which make up our country. The motorcycling community is a culture group, of some 1 million plus nationally and which has been starved for an acceptable Australian programme to call their own; one with which their diverse fraternity can identify.

We at STEREO 974 have developed a 2 hour programme, formatted to appeal to the diverse, but yet united motorcycle community. The name "On Yer Bike" is a title which can and will evoke the desired level of interest from the million plus long-time riders, not to mention aspiring and "wannabe" riders and their families in Australia.

We have managed to secure the experienced and proven talent of Tony Quantrell (Quanny to his friends), a dyed-in-the-wool motorcycle enthusiast, with the presence, experience and knowledge to add excitement to the programme from day one. Quanny is well known for his long running association with Harley riders throughout Victoria. Quanny is an accomplished and knowledgeable motorcyclist, who will give us that recognizable quality and presence, so necessary to the radio audiences of today.

Quanny will add support to anchorman and experienced presenter Alex Money. Alex has been an integral part of the motorcycle culture for many years, Alex is a past president of The Motorcycle Riders Association of Australia and is currently on the Executive Committee of the Victorian Motorcyclists Union, he is well known for being an active lobbyist for motorcyclists within Government circles and was founder and host of the popular mainstream radio programme "On Yer Bike". Alex now brings his experience to STEREO 974.

"On Yer Bike" is scheduled to be aired in the time slot of 10:00AM-12Noon on Saturday, which is considered prime time for this type of programme.

Please feel free to contact Alex on 0414 994 600 at any time. We look forward to welcoming you to "On Yer Bike" and STEREO 974 you are welcome to call our talk-back line on 9318 0444 to contribute to the programme on air with worthwhile, topical comment.
