KASEY HAZEN APPEAL Posted: Thu 9th May 2013 - 14:05

Kasey Hazen Appeal

Take a moment to imagine. You're a parent. You love your child beyond measure and she has grown into a beautiful young woman who suddenly doesn't know who you are. What you do or where she is. Her memory has been wiped. And there are no answers from health professionals. No diagnoses, no known outcome, no ideas on how to proceed. Nothing. Just a big chasm between who your child was and who they may end up being.

That's exactly what Barham family Ray and Lisa Hazen are coming to terms with as their 14 year old daughter, Kasey, faces an unknown future.

Eight months ago Kasey, a happy bubbly kid with a left of centre, out- look on life, began feeling unwell and then her whole world changed. For the Hazen family this is a reality that has thrown their entire lives into chaos, and after fighting her way through operations, delay and cancellations Kasey is still no closer to an answer and recently took a turn for the worst.

Her father, Ray said the at the beginning of the latest episode Kasey started off with a feeling or disjointedness and a spacey feeling in the morning and by the time they had her at Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne she was having difficulty talking and communicating.
"She had some knowledge such as her name, who we were, what we did and all of that. She did know where she was, but not what day year or month it was. By the next morning she couldn't talk and had no idea where she was, but still knew who she was and that I was her dad but not what my name was or what I did, same thing for Lisa. By the next day she knew nothing including us, she could no longer walk or talk and was very confused." Ray said.

Ray and Lisa now have Kasey back at home in Barham where she is a year nine student, and find themselves as her full-time carers trying to deal with the reality of her undiagnosed, but serious illness.

One week before the latest set of symptoms in Kasey's illness began, Ray was awarded an Order of Australia (OAM). For many years the Hazen family has been heavily involved in community radio, giving opportunities to so many people and opening the horizons for those in rural communities. Despite their own struggles, this family has contributed so much to those around them on a 100% voluntary basis. The Hazen family live on a pension.

As much loved and valued members of their community, an appeal has been set up by long-time friends and colleagues, Rod Boyd and Graeme Macartney.

"We have all been shocked and saddened by Kasey's illness but have been impressed by the fight and determination that she shown over the last 8 months. Many of us have felt somewhat helpless, wanting to do something for Ray, Lisa and Kasey but besides offering our love and support we have been at lost as to know what to do. Therefore an appeal has been set up to help with some living expenses and Kasey's Rehabilitation costs.

Mr. Macartney said the appeal has kicked off quite well with in excess of $1000 already pledged. "Kasey's school mates have jumped in behind the appeal and are organising a number of fund raisers in the town and also doing some practical things. We need every one to get right behind this appeal as it is going to be a long hard battle." Mr. Macartney said.

A facebook page has been set-up as a way for the Hazen's to keep family and friends up to date on Kasey's progress, and an excerpt from Ray shows just where they are at at the moment,

"We took Kasey out for a drive around town and to see some of her friends while she didn't know any of them she thought they were all nice people. She has spent the afternoon exploring her room and showing us all the cool stuff that whoever owns that room has......*S* that has to make you smile...."

The 2013 Lions Biggest BBQ is in full swing, with many Lions Clubs around Australia working together to encourage Australian communities to support the efforts of the Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation (ALCCRF) achieve its vision of 100% survival for kids with cancer.
"It never ceases to amaze me what Aussies can do when they work together" said Jim Ede, Trustee of ALCCRF. Who would have thought the good old Aussie Barbie could have been used to help Lions raise over $4.5 million for childhood cancer research. Well that’s what we have done but the job’s not over. More than 600 Australian kids are diagnosed every year with various forms of childhood cancer and unfortunately we are still seeing around three kids dying every week.
Many of the 1,400 Lions Australia clubs will hold barbeques during April to raise funds for medical research into the causes and prevention of, and to find a cure for, childhood cancer. Why Lions have been passionately supporting childhood cancer research since 1996 is very simple. "We believe every child deserves the chance at a healthy life" said Peter Lamb, also a Trustee of ALCCRF.
